Braveheart & My Beard

Braveheart & My Beard

“Fight and you may die. Run and you will live….. at least awhile. And dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that…… for one chance, just one chance, to come back here as young men and tell our enemies that they may take our lives but they will never take our freedom!”

I am watching Braveheart for the probably the 12th time and somehow it gets better and better every time I watch it. William Wallace is my hero. Ok well actually Jesus is my hero, but William Wallace makes me think about Jesus.

“Fight and you may die. Run and you will live……at least awhile.” Every time I hear William Wallace say these words there is something in my heart that stirs in me to fight. I want to fight!!!! I do not want to run.

So the question becomes what to fight for in my life. The answer I believe is in William Wallace’s last line…”They may take our lives but they will never take our freedom.” I want to fight for freedom. And not just any kind of freedom, but the kind of freedom that John Paul II talks about “Freedom is not the ability to do whatever, but authentic freedom is the power to do what I ought. “ Will you fight with me for a true authentic freedom? Let us do what we ought and experience a freedom in Jesus Christ. This freedom may have boundaries of morality and purity, but it is greater than any freedom the world could promise me without limits. So let us fight and die in the Risen Christ!!!!

I am going on 8 days without shaving my face. Really for no reason. It is starting to itch me and I am tempted on shaving it, but I wonder if there is a cause worthy of me not shaving. Like Fr. Pat gave up shaving for lent, which is a good cause, but lent is almost over. So comment me back with a reason to let me grow a beard. Like I will not shave till the lettuce workers get better pay or lunch ladies get better working conditions or less homework.

  1. I love your blog vinny :)
    It is very inspirational.
You should not shave for lent until the doctors, firefighters and police officers get paid more than professional athletes.

  2. Hey, hey Vinny,
I’m really enjoying your blogs. There is so much you could grow your beard for – freedom for life for the unborn, freedom for prayer in public places – especially our schools, freedom for our teens to live morally without being crucified by other peers, freedom from proverty, freedom from addictions – the list goes on and on. But I guess these are all ongoing chains we need to pray for so you might have a beard down to your ankles if you chose one of these. So I would say, a fight would be that we as a community, a church, a nation would celebrate the Paschal Mystery this Holy Week and truly experience Christs resurrection in our life. Wish I could see you with your beard.

  3. Hey Vinny,
maybe my vote doesn’t count because I don’t know if you meant to send me emails in South Dakota, but I just wanted to let you know that I still remember you guys. I read your emails and pray for you. I remembered that you tried to grow a beard a few years ago and I think I told you that you looked like you were living under a bridge or something else stupid! So sorry about that, but I figured I could be more constructive this time. I remember you told me once that one of your favorite saints was St. Vincent De Paul. It would be cool if you could use your beard to do something positive that was in your control like a Vinny for St. Vincent give-athon :) I know there are many big things to fix in the world, but Mother Teresa said something like: you start to change the world by doing the small things around you one at a time. Well, we don’t have a St. Vincent De Paul Society up here in where I live, which seems very weird to me. There is just a different way of helping up here I guess, but any way, if you tried to raise money for SVDP or some specific thing your beard might be a cool, powerful way to do it.
    Peace in Christ,
    Lindsay
