“Retreat, Prom, & Brady Bunch”
April 1, 2009

3 days after the retreat and feeling pretty good. I just downloaded the retreat theme song “Desert Song” by Hillsong. It is an amazing song!!! The retreat sessions were based on the four parts of the song: Desert, Fire, Battle, and Harvest.

I want to talk “battle.” I always feel like retreats are a battle. We battle physically with little sleep and long days. We battle spiritually to reflect on who we are, where we are, and where are we going. We battle spiritually to accept a new life in Jesus. Over the years, I have battled with many people to accept this new life. I have battled to accept a new life in Jesus. In the battle, I have left too many of my friends on the battlefield and too many of my friends have left me on the battlefield. I am a fool when I think I can hold my own on the spiritual battlefield and, friends, you are fools if you think you can hold your own by yourselves.

“iWill” no longer spiritually battle alone.

“iWill” no longer leave others on the spiritual battlefield.

I started by downloading the retreat theme song and an hour later I was watching my favorite movie clip on YouTube. I want to share it with you. Check it out below.

It made me think of Prom. I know some of you have Prom this weekend. Oh, what a battle Prom can be for so many. How much to spend on dinner, transportation, dress, tux, flowers, Prom tickets, etc. The battle of one’s own morality. I know for a lot of teens there is more pressure than any other night of the year to surrender their bodies and the gift of themselves to someone they think is very special. I will pray and fast this Saturday for you that Prom is one of the most memorable events of your life. I will pray and fast that Prom is not a night where your salvation is compromised through sinful behavior. God is calling you to something greater. Greater is staying pure and making decisions that you know in your heart of hearts is right.

  3. Hey Vinny!
    Great blog! Way to go! You have taken a general theme such as “The Battle” and your right (the Christian Life is a battle) and made it specific for your teens in everyday life – The Prom! Wow! Thanks for your warning! You do what all youth leaders are about – and you do it excellently! Continue your work hard in Fighting the Good Fight of faith & preventing casualites on the battle field! I stand with you in prayer – praying that you continue to be led & guided by the Holy Spirit winning victory in Jesus Christ – for you teens! Nothing is more important as you so well know! Your Parish and your teens are very fortunate to have such loving people as you and Deb.

    Thanks for your great care and love to those whom God has appointed you to shepard. In season and out of season you do the work of an evangelist! Thanks for your witness!

  4. Vinny – once again, you rock. You ARE a rock for these teens. I’m so glad that we have you to teach these kids to grow closer to Christ through Word, Worship and Evangelism… By example, by leadership, by discussion, by your willingness to reach them in new ways (ie… blog, utube, and Deb’s Amazing Race). You two are wonderful leaders, and even though the kids often find it hard to share that they are grateful, I know they are… and we, as parents, are also VERY grateful.

    This is an awesome blog, and something tells me that you will be attracting MORE teens and visitors to this site than just our youth-group. You are a shining light to those around you. His light is bright in you – important, as although we should never ‘enter battle’ alone, we need someone to lead. You were chosen to lead, Vinny, and we’re blessed to have you. It is through you that these kids are motivated to choose Christ over sin…
    Psalm 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;
    he delivers them from all their troubles.
    You help them to find tools to communicate, and you provide a light so they can follow Him and be delivered from troubles, temptation and the like.

    There is no more noble a task. Congratulations on serving Him so faithfully.

  5. PS… MARSHA MARSHA MARSHA!!!!! (dude… best line in the whole movie!)
